$300M Wellness Brand Develops Spa Tech for Hawaiian Wellness Retreat

A new wellness brand is positioning itself to make waves within the industry. Larry Ellison, founder of computer software company Oracle, recently partnered up with physician David Agus, M.D., to create a new $300 million wellness company called Sensei. In November 2019, the duo established the first Sensei Retreat at Sensei Lānaʻi, A Four Seasons Resort (Lanai City, HI) on Ellison’s private Hawaiian island of Lānaʻi. The wellbeing retreat contains 10 private 1,000-square-foot spa sanctuaries known as Hale—meaning home in Hawaiian—which house Ofuro tubs, infrared saunas, and outdoor pools.

In each Hale, spa therapists provide customized treatments for each guest by combining ancient healing traditions with modern technology.  For example, the wellness experts at the retreat use the Sensei-developed Thermal Body Mapping (TBM) system, which utilizes infrared cameras to detect temperature variations within the body to reveal asymmetries, muscle tightness, and areas of pain. The practitioners use this key information to deliver a custom massage and identify opportunities to address the challenges in the guest’s immersive treatment program, such as through private strength training or aqua therapy.

The overall ethos of the retreat is the “Sensei Way,” which focuses on three practices: move (how we interact with our environment), nourish (what fuels us), and rest (how we recover and grow). Each guest’s personalized itinerary, curated by their dedicated Sensei Guide, includes private wellness consultations, classes, spa treatments, and nutritious food from on-site restaurant Sensei by Nobu, which incorporates vegetables from the nearby Sensei Farms.

“Sensei Retreats seeks to expand the wellness traveler category by introducing a truly luxurious, customized experience designed to enhance your wellbeing and inspire you to incorporate healthy practices during your stay and throughout your life,” says Kevin Kelly, CEO of Sensei. “The beauty of Lana'i and the retreat’s private Hale spa quarters and botanical art gardens are unmatched.  And, Sensei’s innovative and evidence-based wellness programs create an environment for discovery and renewal.”
