Situated in Sedona, AZ, within Boynton Canyon in Coconino National Forest, a region famous for its red rocks and biodiverse landscapes, Mii amo is an award-winning, world-class destination spa that has helped guests connect with nature, focus on wellbeing, and achieve their personal wellness journey goals since 2001. After closing for more than a year to undergo a $40 million expansion and renovation, Mii amo opened its doors to guests again in February 2023.
Boynton Canyon, located within one of Sedona’s seven main energy vortex sites, is an electromagnetic area that is renowned for its balanced, calm, and sacred energy that can help align a guest’s mind, body, and spirit. By incorporating the stunning scenery of Boynton Canyon, its natural palette, and integrating its medicinal properties, Mii amo’s original architects, New York-based Gluckman Tang, worked to expand and enhance the previous design to highlight these distinct elements.
Among the new features intended to connect the guest to the spiritual and healing properties found in Boynton Canyon, is a new light-filled movement and fitness wing, a signature restaurant, and new treatment rooms and guest rooms. Mii amo also boasts private outdoor spaces for guests to enjoy the property’s enchanted natural surroundings, including a Relaxation Lounge and Garden, a Journey Plunge Pool and Garden, a Sensory Garden with a reflexology path, expanded outdoor dining, and an outdoor lounge with a fireplace. Additional elements include a labyrinth, a hammock grove, and a yoga lawn, all with views of the surrounding picturesque red rocks.
Inside, guests can meditate and reflect in the property’s newly refreshed Crystal Grotto. This circular space with a domed ceiling, centers around a pedestal of petrified wood featuring a peaceful fountain and an illuminated quartz crystal. The space is intentionally designed so that once a year on the summer solstice, a beam of sunlight strikes the crystal, connecting the earth and sky in luminous harmony.
Upon arrival, Mii amo’s guests begin their individualized wellness journey by working with a dedicated guide to customize their three-, four-, seven-, or 10-night all-inclusive Mii amo Journey stay, which all include a credit to the newly renovated spa. In addition to the 21 treatment rooms (14 single massage rooms, three facial rooms, two rooms with dry float tables, one sound lounge room, and one couples’ massage room), the spa now features a new consultation wing with additional rooms and a dedicated relaxation space to provide a private setting for sessions with Mii amo’s mindfulness team and therapists.
The extensive spa menu includes a range of face and body treatments using Babor products, and as part of a commitment to slow wellbeing, Mii amo has extended the length of all its treatments to either 75-, 100-, or 125-minute sessions. The spa menu also consists of less-traditional services, such as the Soul Consciousness (1 hour 40 minutes), which includes guided imagery, energy work, emotional release, and breathwork to help guests be more aware, and restore harmony and balance; and the Intuitive Massage (starting at 75 minutes), which combines a gentle massage with an energy reading to help the guest deeply reconnect to their sense of wholeness.
Guests may also choose to experience the spa’s energy and spiritual services, which can help them gain clarity, deepen insights, and find inner wisdom. Such offerings include reiki, hypnosis, and Aura Photography (starting at 75 minutes), in which an aura photograph is taken of the guest before and after a guided meditation so that the practitioner can provide an in-depth reading as to why the photos differ and how they can have the power to balance their own chakras and energy. “Time spent at Mii amo is an invitation to delve beyond the surface, enhanced through thoughtful, diverse programming and experiences,” says Kalei Luna, spa director at Mii amo. “To create the spa menu for the reopening of Mii amo, we explored our previous menu that had evolved over 20 years in operation. Our menu of more than 80 services provided opportunities for guests to reconnect, reflect, restore, and re-engage with the facets in their lives that most serve and fulfill them. Our purpose was to expand on the success of our past and enhance our guest experiences. We reviewed feedback from our guests and team to refine any current offerings we wished to keep and align new offerings with our pillars of sense of place, connection, and wellbeing.”
In addition to relaxing and recharging in the spa, guests may partake in a range of personal and group instruction classes and offerings at the new 3,300-square-foot fitness and movement studios, which look out onto the Sensory Garden. Guests can also enjoy a series of classes and programs at the adjacent Trail House at Enchantment Resort, which offers hike-in/hike-out and bike-in/ bike-out experiences, and is home to the Trail House Outfitters retail shop that is open to guests of Mii amo, featuring outdoor adventure accessories and apparel. The on-property Mii amo Boutique also offers a wide range of items. “The reimagined Mii amo Boutique supports the guests’ wellbeing journey at Mii amo and at home, highlighting both coveted and emerging designers—from men and women’s apparel and athleisure, to gifts and home goods,” says Luna.
