Inside The Spa at Casa de Campo

Located on the southeast side of the Dominican Republic, La Romana is a city known for its white-sand beaches, 16th-century-style Mediterranean architecture, beautiful natural scenery, and its growing tourist population due to a number of beautiful local resorts. Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, which opened in La Romana almost 50 years ago, continues to be a hotspot for celebrities and other notable guests. Among the highlights of this expansive 7,000-acre resort are three golf courses, including Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, and The Links courses, each designed by the legendary architect Pete Dye; a 370-slip marina and yacht club; a polo and equestrian club; Altos de Chavon, an artisan’s village modeled after a 16th-century Mediterranean city; and The Spa at Casa de Campo, which opened in June 2023. “As the first-of-its-kind destination spa, health, and wellness center in the Dominican Republic, The Spa at Casa de Campo provides a unique blend of services, wellness experiences, and cutting-edge technology,” says Irene Campaña, spa and wellness director at The Spa at Casa de Campo.

The 18,000-square-foot state-of-the-art spa and wellness center’s minimal and airy design was intended to create a space that is tranquil for all who visit, according to Campaña. “Throughout the property, the spaces all follow the same tone using an earthly color palette and wood elements,” she says. While the spa’s design has a similar aesthetic to the overall property, according to Campaña, it stands out because of its soothing elements and the relaxing feeling guests experience from the moment they enter. Each of the 12 treatment rooms feature an ambient aesthetic with warm lighting and dark wood tones to ensure guests feel calm throughout their visit. In addition to facials, massage services, and body treatments, guests can enjoy an extensive hydrothermal circuit that includes a sauna, a steam bath, a vitality pool, a cold water pool, thermal loungers, a Kneipp path, and an outdoor pool.

According to Campaña, the typical guest at The Spa at Casa de Campo is seeking an uber-luxurious and distinctive wellness experience. “We offer more than just the typical treatments for our guests who are searching for only the best,” says Campaña. With this in mind, the spa created a menu of offerings that includes several services that are sure to satisfy even the most discerning guests. For example, the Casa de Campo Detox & Restore ($365, 1 hour 50 minutes) features the Gharieni MLX i3Dome and includes a full-body exfoliation, a 30-minute detox session, a face cleanse and exfoliation, and a refreshing garden shower, and concludes with a post-treatment coconut water beverage and light snack. The Organic Garden-to-Table Glow ($365, 1 hour 50 minutes) treatment uses local and all-natural ingredients, such as honey, moringa oil, pure cane sugar, and hibiscus extract to help restore a youthful radiance. It includes a scalp treatment and nourishing facial followed by a massage and concludes with an energizing moringa wellness shot and light snack. “When creating the menu, we wanted to include local elements to our treatments to not only connect our guests to the area around them, but also to ensure the spa was promoting eco-friendly practices by supporting local brands that use indigenous ingredients,” says Campaña.

While all of the treatments on the menu of services are enjoyed by guests, according to Campaña, body treatments are some of the harder treatments to sell at The Spa at Casa de Campo. “However, that doesn’t make them any less amazing,” she says. “They have incredible benefits for your skin and help people connect with their inner self. At The Spa at Casa de Campo, we promote them the same as the rest of our offerings, but put more of an emphasis on the long-lasting benefits since there are so many.”

In order to help guests feel connected to the lush natural surroundings of the Dominican Republic, each treatment room features a private garden and outdoor rain shower. What’s more, a dedicated spa concierge ensures every guest’s need is met during their stay. Visitors to the spa can also enjoy freshly brewed Dominican coffee, smoothies, and light meals at the spa cafe and juice bar, offering fresh, seasonal and locally grown produce.

It’s the attention to detail and the special touches that make the treatments so enjoyable for guests, and creating the menu is something Campaña considered one of the biggest challenges she faced in the spa development process. Says Campaña, “The spa is a locally driven, technology-driven, overall wellness experience, so curating the menu was something we took our time on to ensure it met every goal we had so we could provide our guests with a wellness experience like none other.”
