Prepare For Spring With Mineral Sunscreen

As the colder weather melts away and days get longer, we are reminded of warmer seasons to come. For many of us that means hauling out spring wardrobes, and spring skin care routines!

Not only is the increase in sun exposure damaging for skin, but urban living has also increased the number of toxins and free radicals in the environment, which actively break down the production of collagen in the skin.

To shield skin from damage caused by pollution or harmful UV rays, Eminence Organic Skin Care created a range of products to combat this - the Lilikoi Mineral Defense Collection.

Key ingredients from Eminence Organics new line include Lilikoi, a tropical superfruit packed with vitamins and minerals that are vital for great skin: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, riboflavin and niacin. This antioxidant-rich powerhouse helps to combat free radical damage and shield the skin from environmental stressors.

Cocoa Seed Extract is another key ingredient, helping to prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin resulting from blue-light exposure, protecting the skin from digital stress.

The first product in the defense lineup is a lightweight, non-nano Lilikoi Mineral Defense Moisturizer SPF33 packed with powerful antioxidants and pollution-fighting actives that create a physical barrier against environmental stressors, deflecting harmful micro-particles that damage skin.

The new mineral defense line also features blue light protection, referring to the light emitted from your personal electronic devices, computers, and television. The blue light can contribute to premature skin aging, has been shown to contribute to a break down in collagen and elastin, as well as causing pigmentation and inflammation. The illuminating Lilikoi Light Defense Face Primer, with SPF 23, utilizes cocoa seed extract to neutralize blue-light damage.

While both mineral and chemical sunscreens protect your skin from the sun’s powerful rays, the all-mineral protection works much differently. Mineral formulations use natural compounds like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to block the sun from your skin, whereas chemical sunscreens change UV rays into heat, which is then absorbed and released by your skin. A simple way to understand how mineral sunscreen works is to imagine the sun’s harmful rays being ‘reflected’ upon contact with the top dermal layers of the skin.

Though we should always wear some form of sun defense year-round, it’s even more essential in spring. We can often be fooled by the cooler temperatures of this season, making us think our skin isn’t experiencing the damage caused by a hot summer's day. Temperate weather, however,  doesn’t mean damage isn’t happening, or that we can skip sun protection.

Top tips for spring skin defense to remind your customers:

  • Create your barrier

Even if you know you won’t be outside very much, it’s always best to apply a primer or moisturizer with sun defense or mineral protection. Not only are UV rays harmful, but so are toxins and microparticles in the air while outside, and in front of a device screen.

  • Check your sunscreen

It’s important to check the expiry date of your sunscreen, as products passed the use-by dates may not work, leaving you completely vulnerable to the damage from the sun’s rays, while you mistakenly think you’re protected

  • Know the ingredients

Are you headed for snorkeling this spring? If so, Hawaii has banned some common ingredients used in sunscreen,  so check to make sure your sunscreen does not include these. The Lilikoi mineral defense products are reef safe, so no need to worry there!

  • Re-apply

Not only should you be applying sun protection before you head out for the day, but it’s also just as important to reapply every couple of hours, and more frequently if you’re swimming or exercising and sweating it off.

  • Other protection

Whether it’s a hat or a light, long sleeve top, other forms of sun protection are important, even if it doesn’t feel too hot. Those overcast days can be deceivingly damaging to skin!

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer, so it’s best to stay conscious year-round. Our skin bathes under the sun much more frequently leading into summer, and defense against the harmful UV rays is important.

All-mineral sunscreen is suitable for all skin types, while zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are reef-safe, making all-mineral sunscreen ideal for people who spend time at beaches and oceanside resorts. All products in the Lilikoi Mineral Defense Collection feature non-nano technology, have no white cast and are free of pore-clogging silicones.

You can shield yourself from the elements with Eminence Organics’ new all-mineral products, designed to protect you from environmental stressors, including pollution, blue light, and the sun. Layer them together for comprehensive protection or wear them individually with other staples from your skincare routine.
