4 Tips for Achieving Optimal Skin Health This Winter Season

Dixie Peters, lead esthetician at Stillwater Spa at Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino (Incline Village, NV), shares four tips for achieving optimal skin health this winter season.

As the winter season is upon us, many destinations will be experiencing a change in climate with colder days in the forecast. While the winter season brings along snowy sceneries and cooler temperatures, it is important to consider the impact of the seasonal shifts when it comes to skincare. The shifting outside atmosphere and temperatures change skin’s needs for hydration, exfoliation, and protective measures.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

My most important tip for taking care of skin during the seasonal shift is to hydrate. Depending on your location, the colder days of winter tend to dry out the skin which takes away both key hydration and oil needed to maintain skin health. I recommend adding hyaluronic acid into a skincare routine year-round, but especially during the fall and winter months. This product is incredible at providing a lightweight layer of moisture that makes an impact by minimizing the signs of aging, plumps, and makes fine lines and wrinkles less visible.

2. Exfoliation is Key

With the increase in dry air conditions due to cold weather, it is also important to keep skin exfoliated. Dead skin cells can form a barrier on the skin and keep any products from penetrating the skin. Depending on skin sensitivity, I recommend using a gentle exfoliation scrub at least three times a week, followed by the application of antioxidants such as vitamin C and niacin, which are helpful for protecting the skin from radical damage due to the changing seasons and outside elements.

3. Dress to Protect

Although the winter weather is chilly and the sun seems to be less intense, it is very important to continue to use a daily sunscreen and protective clothing when spending time outdoors. In fact, due to our high-altitude alpine location here in North Lake Tahoe, sunscreen is a must year-round regardless of weather conditions or temperature. I recommend using a UVA and UVB SPF 50 mineral sunscreen with titanium and zinc oxide, which are more eco-friendly and helpful for preserving our beautiful natural setting near Lake Tahoe. It is important to remember to reapply every three hours to ensure efficient protection.

Additionally, wearing sunglasses can help to further protect sensitive areas around the eyes from further sun exposure. I recommend getting a polarized option in order to protect the eyes from the intense brightness that can be present year-round, from the sun reflection on the lake to the bright snowy days on the mountain.

4. Take Time for Some TLC

In addition to adding extra moisture and exfoliation to a regular skincare routine, I recommend taking some time to visit a professional esthetician who can help you map out your journey to health skin through seasonal changes. For example, here at Stillwater Spa at Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, our team of dedicated experts works with each of our guests to customize their skincare experience through tailored facial services. We can also help to recommend specific products and routines based on the guest’s preferences and skin care types.
