To Matte Or Not: The Latest Lip Color Trends

One of the most contested cosmetic trends of this winter is matte lips. But according to the experts, it really comes down to client preference. Here’s how they are tackling the matte debate.

Luscious Cosmetics' Mehrbano Sethi says matte tones can be used to make a bold lip look. She suggests choosing a deep color like plum. “Major cosmetic trends for 2017 and 2018 include emphasized lashes, glowing complexions, statement lips in metallic and deep matte hues,” she says.

Au Naturale Cosmetics’ Paige Peerenboom agrees, saying clients should focus on a matte finish if they are choosing a lipstick and an iridescent topcoat for glosses. "For fall and winter, we usually see a lot of deep earth tones, but this season is all about twists with pops of bright orange and romantic, muted bloom hues,” she says.

Alejandro Falcon, artistic director and corporate educator of Osmosis Pür Medical Skincare, is gravitating towards deeper hues for this winter, but he also agrees with going bold. “The lips are going to have more of a statement with deep burgundies, red plums, and even darker shades in cream style formulas.”

Savvy clients are scrolling through their Instagram feeds and seeing a range of beauty looks, from ombre lip application to extreme contouring. However, only a few looks are leaving the screens and being requested in spas. Jane Iredale’s Natalie Soto-Carlisle says ombre lips, or using two colors to shade the lip, is the easiest Instagram trend to recreate. “The beauty of this trend is it does not limit you to one shade, it allows you to be creative and try all types of combinations,” she says.
